If you know me then you know I LOVE to entertain. To have my family and friends over for brunch, a cocktail hour, dinner party, game night or basically any reason just brings me joy. It also explains why I became an Event Coordinator and went to school to get a degree in Hospitality Business. Yes, there are stressful and challenging times, but at the end of the day when you see your loved ones mingling and enjoying what you’ve put together for them it’s such a gratifying moment!
In order to have a successful party or gathering I do have a few tips and tricks that are my go to to make each event a hit. Implement these and in no time you’ll be the hostess with the mostess!
My Favorite Entertaining Must Haves
- A Clean House
- If you don’t try anything else I’m going to share, at least nail this one! Your guests first impression is when they walk into the door. Now I know life can be crazy. But remember, you planned this event in advance and it’s not like someone just came over unannounced.
- A quick vacuum, dusting and putting away the cluster of everyday life is a must. Even if this means you close off a room and that’s where the things go!
- Candles
- Nothing sets the mood more than some candles. It’s a warm and welcoming gesture. Especially for a cocktail and dinner party.
- While I love my bath & body works candles, try and only light one of the scented candles in the main party area. Keep it to a clean and crisp scent as well which will appeal to most guests.
- For candles that are around where guests will be eating keep those unscented. You don’t want the smell of your meal to be downplayed by too strong of a smell from the candle.
- Bonus – candles in the bathroom add that extra level of elegance. Keep these to fresh scents like lavender, lemon or spruce.
- Flowers
- Who doesn’t love fresh flowers? They add a pop of color to your home and make for a great centerpiece.
- If you’re having a dinner party try and think of floral arrangements that are lower so that everyone will still be able to see one another at the table and not be blocked by flowers.
- Music
- Pick a playlist that fits the theme of your party!
- Cocktail Napkins
- If you know me, you know I have to have cocktail napkins for all seasons and events. They’re fun and add an element of decor to your table presentation.
Now for the Good Stuff!
- Stocked Bar / Beverages
- Beer, seltzers and soda water in the fridge.
- Lots of ice is a must.
- Red and white wine
- Specialty cocktail to fit the theme
- Vodka, Gin, Bourbon and Whiskey
- Cut lemons & limes
- Soda Water & Tonic Water
- Cocktail Classes
- Wine Glasses
- Champagne Flutes
- If you want everyone to bring their own beverages that’s completely ok too! Just make sure you have the ice, mixers and lemons and limes to help them out!
- Appetizers
- Depending on the type of party you’re planning will determine the amount of appetizers.
- Brunch
- 2 small appetizers is sufficient (yes, you can have appetizers at brunch!)
- Mini fruit skewers
- Avocado toast on little baguette slices
- Cocktail Party
- 4-5 appetizers
- These can range from veggies & dip, bruschetta, charcuterie, cheese display, a dip with crackers, etc!
- Dinner Party
- 3 appetizers
- You don’t want your guests to be too full but you don’t want them to starve before dinner either!
- My go to are mixed nuts, sliced veggies with hummus and cheese and crackers.
Don’t let these things intimidate you either! With a little bit of planning and trial and error you’re going to get the hang of it in no time. I really hope my favorite entertaining must haves will help you become a more confident host!
